Day 30 of Firsts: Go to the Movies By Myself

30 Jan

Drama is life with the dull bits cut out. ~Alfred Hitchcock

I have to say with all the fencing, walking, and dancing I’ve done this week, I woke up plain exhausted. All I wanted to do was sit on my derriere! This is why I decided to go see a movie…by myself.

Now my husband questioned why this should be a first. I asked him if he’s ever been to the movies by himself. He couldn’t recall. Neither can I.

We don’t do it because we are conditioned to believe this is a couple thing, or friend thing, not something you should do by yourself. My female friends say they’d be embarrassed to go to the movies alone. What would people think? “Poor thing, she’s alone with her popcorn?”

Anyway, I wish you could see the evil eye this guy gave me when I bought my ticket. Guess he didn’t want to be on camera.

The movie was Extraordinary Measures. (You can wait until this one comes out on video, if you want my opinion.)  By the way, my husband insisted I not see a movie he wants to see with me.

I love movies. I realized today I’ve probably denied myself going to the movies hundreds of times because I didn’t want to go by myself.  Today I felt completely content alone with my popcorn. Nobody gave me a second glance. It was the 1:00 matinee. Maybe it would feel different at night.  You can see it wasn’t very crowded.

Anyway, perspective is everything. After dancing around a room with my eyes closed with strangers (see yesterday’s blog) this seemed incredibly tame. Easy.

Maybe that’s what happens when you get used to trying new things. It gets easier.
