Day 133 of Firsts: Go to the Opera

13 May

Opera is where a guy gets stabbed in the back, and instead of dying, he sings. ~Robert Benchley

You’ll have to forgive me. It’s after 11pm and I’m bleary eyed after going to my first Opera.

It’s true. There are gaps in my cultural experience and I decided to fill this one with Verdi’s La traviata at the Philadelphia Academy of Music.

There’s a big announcement in the beginning that you are forbidden to take video or pictures. Well…  what can I say.  Oops. I did it again.

I have to say I’m not sure how I felt about it.  I heard one guy behind say “uninspiring”.  Someone else nearby shouted “Bravo”.

Hmm.  I have nothing to compare it to. The voices were incredible. The orchestra was lovely.

I liked the third act.  (I have to admit, I fell asleep during the 2nd. But I’ve been up since 5am.)

Thank goodness for the English translation projected above the stage.

By the time the “fallen woman” died in her lover’s arms, it was about the third time I thought she died.

It was an experience and I’m grateful for friends who shared it with us tonight.

And I’m glad I’m not an Opera virgin anymore.
