Day 178 of Firsts: Play Charity Softball with Firefighters

26 Jun

All men are created equal, then a few become firemen.  ~Author Unknown

It was the NBC10 Fighting Peacocks up against the Drexel Hill Fire Department today in Glen Mills.  (It was a first for me playing catcher for a few innings and cheerleader the rest.)

The softball game was for charity; a hero’s fund to help families of firefighters, police, emergency workers who’ve lost their lives serving their community.

I just have to say what an awesome group of men and women on both sides.   It was brutally hot and we were having too much fun.

This is how it all went down. Watch for the sudden fire emergency at the end. A reminder once again of the risk and sacrifice firefighters take on every day.

The final score was 11 to 10 in 11 innings.  It was touch and go but the Fighting Peacocks pulled out a win.

The Drexel Hill Firefighters graciously invited us back to their firehouse anyway for a fab Italian dinner.  While we were all eating, the alarm went off.  Our softball opponents left family, friends and hot dinners on the table to run out to a transformer fire.

They really are heroes; everyday heroes.  I think we forget that sometimes.
