Day 322 of Firsts: Geocaching

17 Nov

One’s own self is well hidden from one’s own self; of all mines of treasure, one’s own is the last to be dug up. ~Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche …

Earlier this year I did a no tech kind of treasure hunt. Today I did the high tech version called geocaching. Blog reader Denise Kleiner says it’s her passion and she’s writing a book about it. I met her on jewelers row in Philly to learn how to find a cache.

But first I went online to check out the geocaching web site

Denise thinks it’s more fun to create the geocache but then you have to be committed to mainting it.  I’m not ready for that responsibility.  She says some people go on vacation just to go on geocaching hunts.

It’s interesting.  A little modern day sleuthing. I like it.

I think the really GREAT geocaching adventures are the ones that take you to unbelievable, beautiful places that you never knew existed – places that leave a lasting impression… those are the great ones. Because then the cache serves multiple purposes: a leisure activity, leading you to never-before-seen (by you) places, and also being “green” because a lot of “cache-ers” follow the “cache in, trash out” rule – and pick up trash along the way to and from finding the cache… gives it more purpose and meaning 🙂
