Day 357 of Firsts: Skate at the River Rink

23 Dec

In skating over thin ice, our safety is in our speed. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

I’d never skated at an outdoor rink before. It’s different. It’s a lot COLDER! I haven’t ice skated in ages and I move like an old lady on ice. Ha. Thank goodness Alexa went with me.

Fun though. Nice to see families and kids out enjoying the city rink at Penn’s Landing.

Day 356 of Firsts: Tennis Lesson

22 Dec

Good shot, bad luck, and hell are the five basic words to be used in a game of tennis, though these, of course, can be slightly amplified.  ~Virginia Graham, Say Please, 1949

I haven’t picked up a tennis racket in 24 years. That was the year I twisted my ankle so badly on a tennis court I couldn’t walk without crutches for weeks.

I never took a tennis lesson. I never learned to serve.  Today in a half hour Chad Hamilton took care of that. He’s a tennis pro with High Performance Tennis Academy in Bala Cynwyd.
Ha! I forgot! I love this game. I can’t wait to play. Loved it. What a great workout. Yep. More tennis please.

Day 355 of Firsts: Download an ITunes Song

21 Dec

Without music life would be a mistake.  ~Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

It seems like everyone in the world is downloading ITunes, but me.  Now that I have an IPad I thought it was time to stop being an ITunes virgin and buy a song.

I had to download a Beatles tune. You’ll have to play the video to see which song.  It takes me back….WAAAAAAAAYYYYYY Back. $1.99 worth of memories.

Day 354 of Firsts: Cut Down a Christmas Tree

20 Dec

Suburbia is where the developer bulldozes out the trees, then names the streets after them.  ~Bill Vaughn

Initially I thought this was a great idea. Now I kind of feel bad about cutting down a tree. I do. I just never cut down a tree before.

My husband usually buys a tree every year. I usually have little to do with it. This year I compelled him to do the “cut your own” as a first.  He handed me the saw.  It seemed like a good idea.

Now I’m thinking, why do people call it a “live”tree.  Hmmm.  Next year maybe it’s time to for a fake tree.  Just a thought.

Day 353 of Firsts: Paint Ceramics

19 Dec

If you hear a voice within you say “you cannot paint,” then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced. ~Vincent Van Gogh

I don’t think I’ve done this since 3rd grade.  I’m terribly untalented at painting and drawing but my daughter Alexa is pretty good.

It was her idea to go to the ceramics studio Color Me Mine in Wayne.  There’s just something peaceful about sitting there at a table painting.  My project, an ornament for my husband who is a Florida Gator fan, is no better than the last one I did a long time ago.  Alexa’s chip and dip looks almost professionally done.

My only regret? We missed watching the spectacular Eagles win today. AHHH.

Day 352 of Firsts: Running of the Santas

18 Dec

Be naughty – save Santa a trip. ~Author Unknown

I was challenged by a co-worker to do the annual Running of the Santas. The truth is it’s a pub crawl, concert thing with a six block walk in center city.

Not my kind of thing, but when a costume materialized from D & J costumes  on Frankford Ave, well….it was a First I couldn’t pass up.  Not to mention our station Holiday Party was right after the walk.  For once I didn’t have to figure out what I would wear. HO HO HO.

Besides, the costume is cute.

Day 351 of Firsts: Do the Dougie

17 Dec

Shake it ’til the moon becomes the sun.  ~Vada Nobles, Carl Sturken, Evan Rogers, and Alisha Brooks, “Pon de Replay,” performed by Rihanna

It must be a week for dancing. Today I learned the Dougie. I learned it on the Rundown show I co-host with Terry Ruggles.  Google it. Check it out. The Dougie is the latest dance floating out there.

Anyway, I look horrible doing it but our producer Elyse Madison seems to have it down.
Hey, it’s a first. And I think we look slightly better than the KNBC crew doing it in LA. (Check youtube.)
